How to Avoid Sneaky Sun-Induced Skincare Woes

As much as we love spending time outside in the warm sun, it sometimes comes with unwelcome side effects like sun-induced cold sores or heat rash. While these problems can be temporarily distracting or downright uncomfortable, they don't have to stop you from enjoying the outdoors. Here's our guide to living your best life and beating sun-induced skincare woes.

Sneaky sun-induced skincare woes:

Sunscreen is an essential part of any summer beauty routine, but it's not the only line of defense against the sun's damaging effects. There are many sneaky perpetrators that can make us miserable by irritating our skin. Eating cooling foods, drinking plenty of water and using natural skincare can help soothe sun-induced skincare woes such as cold sores, allergies, or heat rash. Cucumbers are a cooling food that helps to reduce inflammation and swelling. They're also a great source of vitamin C and silica, which are both beneficial for the skin. Melon is high in water content and contains antioxidants that can help to protect the skin from free radicals. Sweet bell peppers are also high in antioxidants, as well as vitamin C, which can help to brighten skin tone. Using natural skincare products that are designed to soothe and protect the skin is another way to keep your skin healthy and happy this summer.

Soothing and preventing cold sores:

Sun exposure can trigger cold sores, which are painful, unsightly lesions. If you're prone to getting them, it's best to take some precautions. One easy way to soothe them is with honey. Honey contains trace amounts of lysine, an essential amino acid that can help to shorten the duration of a cold sore outbreak. You can apply honey directly to the affected area, or you can dilute it with water and apply it as a compress. Another great option is our Hippie Luxe balm. It's made with organic coconut oil and provides antiviral, antiseptic and antiinflammatory relief. If you know you're going to be spending a lot of time in the sun, it's also a good idea to balance your lysine intake with a supplement, or consult your dermatologist for other options in treating recurrent cold sores.

Preventing heat rash:

With spring in full swing and summer on the way, it's important to be aware of the signs that you might be experiencing a heat-related issue. If you're feeling dizzy, have a headache, or are experiencing nausea, it's time to get out of the sun immediately. You might be suffering from heat stroke, and if left untreated, it can be fatal. Another common issue that arises in the summer months is heat rash. This is caused by sweat glands becoming blocked and can result in a red, itchy rash. If you think you might have a heat rash, try to cool down as quickly as possible by taking a cold shower or bath, and drink plenty of fluids (preferably electrolytes). You can also apply a soothing oil like Hippie Luxe to the skin to assist in cooling.

Protecting your skin from the sun is crucial, but it's also important to know how to soothe the skincare woes that can come from too much sun exposure. From sunburn to cold sores, we've got you covered. Stay safe in the sun and enjoy its warm glow all season long!
