I was really young when I was first introduced to make up.
I remember having a toy make up kit like all other young girls had. The only thing I knew is that I could put it on my dolls to make them look pretty like my mom. Fast forward to my young preteen years I received a make up kit that had a mixture of beautiful colors that I was obsessed with. I loved mixing up the colors and tried to create some crazy shades.
As I grew older, my mom became allergic to a lot of make up brands which caused her to wear no make up a lot of the time. I followed in my mom's footsteps and decided that I no longer wanted to wear make up either because of how irritating it felt on my face. I would still wear it from time to time depending on the circumstances, and every time I did I was told how beautiful I was and how nice I looked.
Deciding not to wear makeup was not the typical norm, especially for a young girl. I was supposed to be make up crazed, and because I wasn't, I often felt a little left out a lot of the time, and I could never relate to the whole make up culture of palettes, contour, highlight, and so on. Regardless, I still felt pretty and sometimes confident in my own skin. There would always be certain girls that would come up and tell me how much nicer I would look if I just put a little make up. Which is ridiculous. I always thought that since I didn't wear make up it didn't make me any less pretty than anyone else, it just made me, me.
But what exactly does that say about our society? I think personally for me, all of these commercials and photo spreads always try to highlight women's insecurities and the whole overview is that if you have this makeup product or if you do your makeup exactly like this model, you’ll look exactly like them. Or if you buy this product it will get rid of this insecurity and so on and so forth.
If you think about it, this is completely crazy! Why are all these outlets trying to attack women for being normal and having an insecurity? Everyone has insecurities. There’s nothing wrong with all the women and girls that love to wear make up, and there’s nothing wrong with the girls and women that don’t. Everyone is beautiful in their own way, and you don’t have to be pretty like her, you can be pretty like you, with or without the make up, and you shouldn't let anyone tell you otherwise.
